SIX LOCAL ARTISTS' VALENTINE-THEMED AUCTION AND EXHIBIT WILL BENEFIT LOCAL CHILDREN’S ARTS ORGANIZATION
San Diego, California, [Release Date]---Last fall, six local artists decided to join forces to jumpstart their business and marketing efforts. ART6 was born out of the realization that while some galleries are struggling in this economy, artists’ own self-promotion and marketing efforts can lead to unusual venues and opportunities, and independence in their art careers. “We decided to take a creative approach to exhibiting our art by staging our own exhibitions in San Diego and LA,” said Brenda York, an ART6 member. “Artists have traditionally shared studios, critiques and technical expertise…so why not share marketing ideas and efforts, as well?”
ART6 members Maite Agahnia, Bronle Crosby, Theresa Vandenberg Donche, Alison Haley Paul, Cree Scudder and Brenda York will be exhibiting in February at India Street Gallery. Temptation6 is the first group show to come out of the ART6 collaboration. “A happy outcome of this way of producing an art exhibit is that our overhead is pretty low, and that lets us give to the community,” says Bronle Crosby.
The group agreed early on that giving back is a priority. With their February show, ART6 will be supporting ArtReach, a non-profit organization that offers on-site visual arts instruction to San Diego County students in grades K-6.
ART6 members are all mothers, and are concerned that art instruction for kids will suffer with California’s slated education budget cuts. “Art programs are usually the first to go when schools experience a tightening of the monetary belt” says Theresa Donche, “and we don’t want to see that happen to San Diego’s kids." Alison Paul added, "Art nourishes kids, it cultivates brain power that is untouched by other forms of learning.” ART6 chose to support ArtReach because they send working artists into schools to work directly with the children, teaching and making art.
The art exhibit, Temptation6, will feature Valentine-themed paintings in six very different styles. The six artists range from abstract and landscape to realism and whimsy. “We are all creating new works for the show, and because we each have such different styles, there’s something for every collector,” commented Cree Scudder. Each artist is painting “Love Tokens,” affordable small format pieces that can be taken home as Valentine gifts the night of the opening reception. Each artist will donate one “Love Token” to the opening night silent auction that benefits ArtReach.
“Not only are we passionate about our art, we are passionate about giving back to our community. Valentine’s Day is all about passions, so it seems like a perfect time to launch the first ART6 exhibit,” said Maite Agahnia. “We welcome all San Diego art lovers and supporters of ArtReach to the February 12th opening reception of Temptation6.”
The opening reception for Temptation6 will be held Friday evening, February 12 from 6-9 pm.
